Friendship and Gifts

I met an old friend the other day, we had a small talk a couple of minutes while I was waiting for my wife, and she was getting some daily supplies from the wet market.  He posed a question to me “What is a friend for and why do we need friends” It was a simple question but it is not a simple answer could cover all definitions of the question. I could only answered it by way of “small talk answer”

Assuming there are two outlets, selling the identical entertainment products, the DVD and others. Prices are the same, sale personals are super, and environment is indifferent to each other. The decision to make to choose which outlet of getting the supplies, the decision are anybody guesses.  The decision is becoming simple; it is the one which is belonging to my friend or one of the sale personals is my friend. My long lost friend was very satisfied with this answer. Will others be satisfied?

There is a statement, at home we depend on our parents, and out there from home we need friends for any eventuality.  Is there any truth?

It was once a time, around the eastern block of our mother earth, popular events, it was the wedding dinners.  It was highly common, there were weddings, there were wedding dinner’s invitations, and there were red packets or the name of “Aun Pau”, “Hong Pau” or whatever, so long it is money inside the red packets. It was tantamount to wedding gifts from guests or rather “Friends” It was such in a situation, the red packets were able to cover up all wedding expenses and make profits.

News was spread around, it was become popular, it was not restricted to wedding dinners, it had birthday dinners, it had house warming dinners, it had recovered from serious illness dinners and it was many more that a slightest excuse could be made and a dinner invitations were so arranged. It was an industry, “dinners for profits” industry and unfortunately the industry was short life!

News was spreading again; it was not good news for the “dinner’s industry” Most of the time, the “revenue” the red packet, it was not able to cover the dinner along, needless to say other expenses. It  was a total lost. However, the entrepreneurs came up with a smart idea, or at least they thought they had a fantastic money making ideas.  Invitation cards contained a clause; minimum of “wedding gift in monetary form” must be inserted into the red packet, the minimum was indicated say, RM200.00 or RM300.00. The result was “in-super”, none turned out for the dinner!

The “dinners for profits” industry is dead, the customary wedding dinners continuing and prevailing.  It is not as popular as before and they are more “variety”. Wedding dinner of the full event of the traditional,  light ceremony, the tea party, it is a light snacks for entertainment relatives and friends, Buffet or no wedding dinner at all, it is “touring wedding”, after simple wedding ceremony, fly off some nice holiday resorts,  local or overseas for honey moon. There is still having arrangement of various types of dinners but for the true event, a clause is inserted and it is “Bring nothing but your presence” The true friendships and gifts once again, it is prevailing.

Friendship and gifts are never separated, it is true friendship or it is “Business Friendship“.  Every corners of everywhere, signage are there, free gifts of free gifts and free gifts. It is a good business technique and they are never fail. Long queue will be there right from the very earning  morning of the day. Are business transactions successfully concluded?  It is yet to be known, the respond of crowd in queues is definitely super good and never missed.

Visiting friend’s house, a gift in hand is the norm.  It is weird empty handed paying someone a visit.  Does it mean paying a visit to friend’s house empty handed, it is considered as not sincere?  Does it mean sincerity can be bought by way of gifts? It is definitely not for me! Others, they will know better by themselves! As far as I am concerned, a clause as what they have inserted into the invitation cards for attending functions. The “Bring nothing but your presence” it is super to me.

Gifts does it mean awful or evil?  It is contrary to the fact that gifts are serving their purpose, they have their aspects of good value and in many occasions they serve best and explicit the holy soul touching duties. A gift of offering human organs to save lives of the needy and it is only one of the many instances of the tears dropping situation of gifts being in existences.
